Why do Blondes and Highlights sometimes turn
ashy, dull or chalky?
When it comes to Blondes – natural or chemically processed – and highlights, the kind of problems that occur are usually brassiness, ashiness, chalky or dusty tones and green tints. When these problems occur, the colorist is forced to take additional steps to “fix” the problem by double processing, reprocessing the ends or processing for a longer time.
In addition, bleached hair can become dry and brittle with split ends and breakage. Repeated processing can cause significant irritation to the scalp as well. You may even see foils that swell or smoke from metals deposited on the hair.
None of this means that going blonde or adding highlights ever has to be a problem.
The main reason for all of the problems associated with blonding and highlighting is the coating of mineral deposits and chlorine from tap water added to the oxidizing chemicals required to bleach out the original color. To avoid problems, you simply have to remove the mineral coating (demineralize the hair) and neutralize the chlorine, which will allow for shorter processing time. Then, stop the oxidation from the bleaching process as soon as the correct level of color removal has been reached.
You are literally coating your hair in dissolved minerals and chlorine every time you shampoo. Both you and your colorist need to understand the effect these minerals and oxidizers have on color processing. Once you do, the problems will disappear and you will get natural, pliable, flowing, brilliant blondes and highlights.
